Back in Atlanta for Fast & Furious

After a couple of months layover, looks like I’m back in Atlanta to finish up work on Fast & Furious 7. I spent 6 1/2 months of 2013 here working on Fast 7 before the awful tragedy that happened with Paul Walker. Even though it was a sad and somber event, it will be good to finish the work that was started. Especially since everyone involved has put so much of themselves into the project already. Here’s a nice piece of fan art that was created by some anonymous artist online. While this isn’t the real advertising one sheet from the studio, it’s still a very well done piece of art.

Iron Man 3 this Friday

Iron Man 3 will be out this Friday. I saw the film this past Sunday and it was pretty damn good. Even though I knew what was coming after spending 11 months working on it, it was still surprising in parts and finally seeing it all put together was great. Having really great actors in most every role certainly helps bring it to life. Ben Kingsley was particularly good. Here’s the latest ‘Critic’s Spot’:

Iron Man 3 Featurette

A new featurette was released today for Iron Man 3. It’s interesting to see the sets in their ‘finished’ form. All of the sets go through so many stages during production. We spend so much time during the construction phase of the sets where we are only seeing them under the awful sodium vapor stage lights. And then we get it built and get ceilings in place and we’re looking at paint finishes with harsh work lights glaring everywhere, it’s still tough to see the ‘big picture’. Then set dressing gets in and puts some practical lighting in place and you can get a little better sense of what you’ve been working on for the past weeks and months, but still it’s not really there completely. Finally on the day of shooting, we get a sense of what the set will look like with the final lighting in place. But even so, many of the sets on this project had greenscreen outside the windows or extensions, so even then it isn’t always possible to see the finished set in all it’s glory. So even though I spent 11 months working on it, it’s still exciting to see a trailer for Iron Man and catch a glimpse of the finished sets.
We had such a good team on this one. Working with Bill Brzeski was great. He brings so much energy as a Production Designer, it’s infectious. Desma Murphy was the Supervising Art director and she did a great job of controlling all of the insanity that happens during production without ever going negative or losing a smile. Jay Pelissier was the other art director with myself. Sharing an office with him was a great time. We could constantly bounce ideas around and debate what would work best for a particular scene or set (not that anyone necessarily listened to us). I look forward to working with them again. Only a few more weeks and it will be out in theaters.

Snake Eyes vs. Jinx: G.I. Joe Retaliation

Only another week until Joe hits the theaters. Plenty of clips are being released during the lead up to March 29th. This is a cool one showing a fight between Snake Eyes and Lady Jinx as they train. This dojo was a great set to work on. It had many challenges in creating a living zen garden on stage with flowing water all set in a modern building and being able to accommodate all of the stunt work that went on during this fight sequence. This was one of many fantastic sets and fights in the film. Looking forward to seeing it.

Iron Man 3 Character Posters

Some of these have been out for awhile, but here are the Iron Man 3 character posters. I spent all of 2012 working on this show. It was a blast. We were able to design and build some fantastic sets and had a really great art department on this one. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished film. I particularly like the Mandarin poster, especially since you can catch a bit of our set in the background.

Rotten Tomato scores for films I've worked on

In the office today someone was deciding whether or not to see the new Bourne movie and they were using its Rotten Tomato score to decide. Not sure if that’s the best meter or not, but it got me wondering about some of the stinker films that I’ve worked on. Not surprisingly there are some very low Tomatometer critic scores, but most of those films have much higher Audience ratings. Either way, I can say I enjoyed working on every single one of them - and all the checks cashed as well! So here’s the compiled list of TomatoMeter scores for films that I’ve worked on…

October Sky 90%
Elmo in Grouchland 77%
Syriana 72%
Muppets From Space 63%
The Secret Life of Bees 58%
Idlewild 48%
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya 44%
I Know What You Did Last Summer 37%
A Good Old Fashioned Orgy 33%
28 Days 31%
Flight of the Phoenix 30%
Empire Records 24%
Mercury Rising 17%
The Jackal 15%
Stay Alive 9%
Virus 9%

A new trailer for G.I Joe: Retaliation

They’ve released a new trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation over at Machinima. It’s looking pretty good. You get to see a few more of the sets we designed and a few hints at some of the bigger action sequences.
